Wireless Survey of University Buildings

Since 2003, over 2200 Wireless Access Points have been installed in University of Edinburgh Buildings providing a wireless service to over 65,000 members of the University and many thousands of eduroam users visiting from other institutions.

Information Services have purchased state of the art wireless signal mapping software and intend to survey many of the University Buildings in order to provide coverage maps and identify wireless deadspots.

In order to obtain the most accurate figures, at least two readings should be taken in each room, and we apologise for any disruption and thank all those who have already allowed us to take readings in their room.

The maps are available for viewing at https://vpnreg.ucs.ed.ac.uk/access/floorplans.html
This survey will take many months and we may have to re-visit certain areas to map any improvements that result from our findings. Therefore some of the maps may not be present and others incomplete, and some may be based on out of date floorplans.
It is "work in progress".

There is an example below of a map which is nearing completion.
The eight colours are graded from the brightest green (-45db or better) indicating the best signal through 5db gradients to bright orange (-75db to -80db) indicating the poorest signal. IE the less negative the db, the better the signal. For comparison 5 bars on a laptop shows about -55db or better and 3 bars on an iphone shows about -50db or better. White areas indicate that either no survey details are available or the signal is worse than -80db.
