JANET Roaming/eduroam network service pages for visitors

These pages contain information which will allow you, the visitor, to make use of the JANET Roaming/eduroam roaming network services in The University of Edinburgh.

Acceptable Use

The use of network facilities while you are visiting is covered by Edinburgh's Computing Regulations, your home institution's Acceptable Use Policies and Computing Regulations, and by the JANET Acceptable Use Policy (to which your institution is a signatory).

As a visitor using the University's facilities you are bound to accept these conditions.

Some details you will need to use the JANET Roaming/eduroam service

• A text list of locations of the central wireless service is available. Check this against the University maps along with the address you are visiting to see if it is covered. Note also that it may also help to ask the University people you are visiting if wireless is available in the areas to be visited - the services are always being updated.

• The SSIDs for use by members of the University are central and eduroam.
  The SSID for use by visitors from other participating JANET roaming/eduroam sites is eduroam.
  

• eduroam
  This allows you to associate with the Wireless Access Point using IEEE802.1X wth WPA2 and AES, although WPA and TKIP are still allowed. The exact flavours of IEEE802.1X are those supported by the RADIUS server at your home site, so you will need to know this information before you visit. However examples of how Edinburgh users configure their machines for IEEE802.1X authentication can be found at .
  However please note that the SSID central is restricted to members of the University of Edinburgh.
  Once authenticated to SSID eduroam you should be leased an IP address in the range 172.20.196.1   to   172.20.199.247.

• Policy on what you can access: once you have accessed the University's wireless network and authenticated, the policy is that your access to the internet is unrestricted but (unless you are a member of the University of Edinburgh) access to sites of the University of Edinburgh is restricted to web services using TCP ports 80 and 443 and also to certain mail relays.

  If you need to access servers which are not on this list, but which you can access from your home site, then you will be able to access them by establishing a VPN connection to your home site, or using a web proxy at your home site. This is not an efficient way of working but will bypass the access restrictions. Alternatively you can contact the manager of the server and ask him if he would like the server temporarily added to the above list by contacting EUCS network services.

You may find it helpful in the early stages of your use of the JANET Roaming/eduroam service to consult your own home institution's pages on eduroam roaming, where some of the issues posed by roaming may have been already anticipated. Note that we cannot assist in configuring your wireless system and can only answer questions regarding availability. While at the visited site, you could consult with whoever you are visiting, or perhaps with a lab supervisor if near to one of the open access labs, or network operations staff at 0131-650 4933 - but only for access information please, not PC support.
